Hello,

I was waiting for the Office 2008 for Mac to change from Mellel to Word to write in Persian, but it doesn't seem to work. Is the new version really supporting Persian script or do we have to stick to other programs?
Many thanks!

Shadi
No Shadi, MS Office for Mac -any version- doesn't support rtl so keep your Mellel!
But if your concern is producing .doc files, then you should try OpenOffice for Mac (it requires a little know how to install) or NeoOffice which is a version of OpenOffice specifically made for Mac. This one is easy to install but it is not as complete as OpenOffice.
Nisus also should export to .doc format pretty good because it uses Mac's own text engine. But for Nisus, it is best to be used on Leopard to take advantage of font support of Leopard.
Many thanks for your answer. I don't know why, I just can't get used to the greyish aspect of mellel. But I'll have to anyway! It's a question of working with it and not really producing mellel or .doc formats.
Cheers,
Shadi
Oh OK.
I actually like its look! Check-out Nisus Express. You might like it better.
Nisus seems much more elegant! I'll try it for 30 days.
Do you have any idea if one program other than Word is working with the Endnote program (a bibliographic software)? It is also one of the reasons why I'm sticking when I can to Word, because I use Endnote so much and the direct referencing.
thanks again!
Shadi
No I'm afraid I don't know. I don't use rtl that often. But Mellel does it AFAIK. Bibliography is one of its palettes. And with an additional software (more expensive than Mellel itself!) it can do Bookends too.

I never used Nisus myself but the discussion forum of these applications should be a good source of information.
The thing with Mellel is that it is an impressive word processor but it does require reading and searching its voluminous Guide.
If you got any info about Nisus, let us know.
Mellel's bibliographic tool is not enough for me, I need a proper software. Bookends seems good as well and converts Endnote files, so, I may have a try. And if Nisus is good, I'll let you know.
Thanks so much,
Shadi
I have seen reports that PowerPoint in Mac Office 2008 does do Persian. Can anyone check that out?

Also I am wondering Whether Entourage might do it.
Yes they do. One report is here (in Persian)

But I didn't see anybody actually using it extensively to evaluate its usability. And what's the point when Word doesn't do it! Another alternative to Entourage that I Demo tested (for 10 minutes!) is Daylite.

But if you are looking for an integrated Office suite, I think we have to wait for iWork to start supporting rtl.

I'm afraid there is nothing you can do. MS Office simply doesn't work for Persian on Mac. Never did. You may check out other applications. NeoOffice and OpenOffice for Mac (free applications) or Mellel and Nisus Express (commercial ones).
