Folks,

I've been trying to post in Farsi on this forum for some time with my Mac, but without in any success.

Does anyone know what the problem is and/or how this could be achieved?

Your help would be appreciated.

Regards.
Try different browsers to see what happens. It didn't work on my Safari either. But I don't think this is a Mac problem. It should be a browser problem.

Thanks for your reply.

So far, I've tried Camino, Safari and Omniweb and none seem to work. I will try IE later on. I believe Firefox will work the same as with Camino, but I will try that too.

Is there a way to use the QWERTY keyboard layout, or the two other Farsi keyboards that come with OS X? That would solve my problem.

I don't think so. You might be lucky with IE because this looks like one of those non standard workarounds made on PC for Farsi.
You can type Farsi in the box but that text (be it QWERTY or any other keyboard layout) is Unicode text and that site doesn't seem to work in compleance with Unicode.
Ask the site master of that site about the problem. I noticed you can post in English there.

Okay, I tried IE and Firefox and none seemed to work.

In fact, IE didn't even display the Farsi characters.

Could you explain about Unicode? Are you saying that site doesn't work in Unicode and that's why I wouldn't be able to type in Farsi in any case?

Well, I really don't know what's going on in here. Actually I was able to type in Farsi in the box but once I clicked on 'send' or something like that, they all turned into question marks. I use Safari. This looks similar to Yahoo email where you can type in Farsi (in the browser) but at the receiving end they all turn gibberish!
The reason I'm saying it might not support Unicode is that it has its own on-screen keyboard. To me, it means that Unicode 'codes' of the characters can't be directly translated in that software from a normal keyboard. Or maybe it's just there for those who never learned to use a Farsi keybord!
I'm not computer savvy. Maybe it's better to post this question in Farsi in Persian page of IRMUG so that our in-house genius Ali&Ali could respond to you with more ease!

Thanks for the reply!

Well I guess that's the problem to begin with. Can't post in Farsi... :?
Their scripts only works with IE(Windows Version)!
Oh well...

Thanks for your response. So does this mean that I could actually use my Farsi keyboard layouts on this forum (and/or the one "next door") to be able to post in Farsi?

If you have selected a Farsi keyboard -any Farsi keyboard- on your Mac, you should be able to type in Farsi in Persian section of Irmug.
We had a lot of trouble with making this site bilingual and we ended up with two seperated site (with link to eachother on the top) but you should register on each site separately. You can use the same name and password for both but this has to be processed for each section separately. For writing in Farsi you should also select right to left direction. (in contextual menu of Control+click)
Actually everybody in this site was writing in Farsi and our problem was that we didn't have an English site like here!

Again, thank you for your replies.

Would I be right in supposing that the same would be true for many/most forums on the web, meaning Farsi posting would only be possible for "specialized" web sites?

More, copying and pasting Farsi from the web usually gives me the message with posted questions marks only, whereas I've noticed people with Wintel machines can copy and paste Farsi with no problem. Would that be true of all Macs? Is there a turnaround solution to that?

It's certainly true for the forum you brought up but I'm not sure you can generalize like that. I don't use a PC and again Ali Rastgar should know better because he runs this site on his PC! (amaizing chap, isn't he?!) but my understanding is that if the site supports RTL and Unicode, the text you copy and paste should work on Mac as well as PC. If it doesn't work on Mac, I don't know how it can work on PC.
Mac users are facing two problems with Farsi pages: one is that many of them are not standard and made with improvisation on PCs, two is that Mac OS X text engine for supporting BiDi (mixed left to right and right to left texts) is not yet complete. Tiger is supposed to solve the second problem. There is also a general effort to eliminate non standard approach for Farsi support. According to a friend who runs a Persian site on the web for PC users, techincally correct Farsi web sites are very few and most of them are non standard. BBC Persian seems to be one of the best. My problem is when detecting a mal function, I can't clearly see if it's originated from non standard web design or OS X text engin. So I can imagine that Apple doesn't get enough bug report related to its BiDi support.
We should be ready to still see a lot of bugs with BiDi support even after Tiger.
